Even in the colder northeastern regions,Chardonnay is proving not just viable, but impressive. Long Island, the Finger Lakes and the Niagara Peninsula all demonstrate that many of their best white table wines are Chardonnay, produced in a leaner, crisper style. Great conversation on Chardonnay. Thought it a little ironic that I taught a consumer class on Chardonnay today. Also thought it a little interesting that I sensed a jab or two , maybe a little disdain for the California oak bomb Chardonnay. I work in retail and would attest that despite the big push from winemakers and this big “Chardonnay purist” revolution, the largest market of hardcore Chardonnay consumers is really looking for the big hedonistic oak bomb. Personally, I think they all have there place. I wouldn’t pair a rich buttery Chard with oysters nor Chablis with cedar plank salmon…
