During this busy Radio day Bob Blue, Winemaker at Bonterra called into the studio to chat and we greatly appreciate it… He will be calling in again very soon. The man has a lot of info to share with you the listener. About Bob Blue: He has become one of the leading spokespersons in the country for the organic approach to winemaking, despite the fact that Bonterra is owned by the multinational drinks conglomerate Brown-Forman. And his speaking engagements take him to countries well beyond his own – to the U.K. for example, which buys over 50% of Bonterra’s production.

Blue’s leading argument is in favour of bio-diversity. It stabilizes the viticulture environment, he argues. Pests that might otherwise be a problem are controlled by their natural predators. Wasps eat leafhoppers for example; roaming sheep eat weeds. (As in fact do wild pigs, which have also been known to roam Bonterra’s vineyards.)

Since 2001 Bonterra has included an area in north-eastern Mendocino known as McNab Ranch, once a sheep farm, but now the site of biodynamic vineyards. It is home to what has become the estate’s flagship wine, The McNab, a Bordeaux-like blend, predominately merlot. Please visit them at www.Bonterra.com

An awful lot has transpired in the last couple of weeks, so I apologize profusely for the lack of entries thus…but the news, compendiums, and overall keeping up with the Joneses has required attention. I feel as if I am in the middle of a fermentation tank at times, trying to keep above the blanket of gases that would prove to envelope and consume me, lest I stay on top of it…

So, the real question is, ‘How are things?’

Things in the wine world are many, fleeting and fine, and not too far off from the parallel universe the rest of us live in. I am constantly reminded that wine is not about us…take example, I am in San Francisco last week competing in the TopSomm finals (a quick congratulations to Marija Kovacheva and Roland Micu), and got the chance to spend the day with my daughter. I tell her that the next days’ competition has my nerves in a bit of a twist, and she replies: ‘You know, that wine stuff is pretty boring. Especially when we are at dinner. That’s all you talk about.’

Reality check, anyone?

Although wine is my universe, I need to remind myself that it isn’t necessarily anyone elses.

The real goal is to find wines that matter when things matter more than wine.

Wine is a thing, made painfully true by the utterings of the head buyer of Costco. A product, little different than the toilet paper we buy in huge quantities, at huge discounts, to wipe our huge a:#es…a necessary evil. But, I implore, still a product that drives the question; if you spent the rest of your life cleaning your backside (1 and a half years with the average lifespan), would it be with treebark or something soft, velvety, that made the day just a little brighter?

Wine. Love It. Live It. Dream It. It changes the world, even if it is yours.

New Generations is the key to a Vineyard Success for many many reasons. Christophe gives us a bit of history and his take and reasons for wanting and needing to be creative. About Hedges Family Estates: The history of Hedges Family Estate begins in June of 1976, with the marriage of Tom Hedges and Anne-Marie Liégeois in a 12th century church in Champagne, France. Ten years after their wedding, an opportunity to become entrepreneurs seemed like a positive move to economic independence, contrasting from the previous decade of working for large multinational agricultural firms. In 1986, this unique opportunity presented itself; Tom and Anne-Marie created an export company called American Wine Trade, Inc., based out of Kirkland, Washington State; they began selling wine to foreign importers. As the company grew, it began to source Washington wines for a larger clientele leading to the establishment of a negociant-inspired wine called Hedges Cellars. This 1987 blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot was sold to the Swedish Wine and Spirit Monopoly, Vin & Sprit Centralen, the company’s first major client.

The eldest of the two, Christophe, spends much of his time sharing knowledge of the terroir and the estate during his travels as national director of sales and marketing. To ground his teachings, he farms his own property using the concept of modern Biodynamic arts, carefully observed under the eyes of John Gomez, Hedges Family Estate vineyard manager. An artist at heart, the Hedges labels are the product of his love for design. Tom, Anne-Marie, Christophe, Sarah, and the entire Hedges company believe place of origin is the keystone of authenticity. Chateau Tanunda is one of the most historically significant winery buildings in the Barossa Valley, built from bluestone quarried at nearby Bethany in the late 1880s. Alexander Eisele  (Volker Eisele Family Estate) grew up on the vineyard and, while it might be said that he has followed in his father’s footsteps, has taken the science of growing superb grapes to another level. As a small boy he often snacked on the juicy fruit right off the vine and refined his taste buds at an early age. His choice of career was no surprise. Alexander, who is fluent in German and Spanish, obtained his degree in International Business and is well equipped to manage the challenge and complexity of a family winery. With his business degree, foreign language skill, refined wine palate and love for the land, Alexander is the ideal successor to his father.

The Estate’s sixty acres of vineyard grow at elevations of 900 to 1100 ft on east, west and south facing slopes as well as on the valley floor. Soils vary from clay-loam to shale. After purchase of the vineyard property, the Eiseles began an extensive redevelopment and restoration of both the vineyard acreage and the riparian corridors. Presently 72% of the vineyard is planted in Cabernet Sauvignon, 12.5% Merlot, 10.5% Cabernet Franc, 3% Semillon and 2% Sauvignon Blanc. Seven different Cabernet clones have been incorporated to provide diversity of flavor.

Ketih, Jordan and William thought is may be a great idea  to talk about Earth Day since we live on it. And yes we talk about the wine that comes from the vine that is planted on the Earth. “One would assume that the grapes used to make wine are treated with tender loving care and kid gloves. After all they are the essence of the final product. Many wineries rely heavily on chemicals to control pests and manage the vineyards. The good news here is that more and more wineries are starting to seriously examine how grapes and soil are managed. The net result is a growing number of wine makers who are producing entirely sustainable, 100% organic, even biodynamically farmed wines. The list gets longer every year and we should all be pleased; in the long run it’s better for the wine, for us and for the earth”. Enjoy the Earth next time you open a bottle of Vino !!!!

Rums stored in former Bourbon barrels, are typically color corrected to minimize irregularities from batch to batch. Instead of adding caramel to color correct each bottling. Arnaud decided to charcoal filter the blend, as is typically done with young white rums. The filtration process stripped the amber rum of its color, but preserved the grassy, tropical, fruity aromas that fill the room when you pour yourself a taste.

Jim Meehan… He insists he doesn’t run a speakeasy and that he’s not into gimmicks. PDT (short for “Please Don’t Tell”) has attracted locals and B&T kids alike for their mix of innovative cocktails served behind a “secret” phone booth in the middle of Crif Dogs in the East Village, which might as well just be a regular door at this point. And after four years their reservations are still always full, no small feat in a city with the attention span of a 4-year-old with ADD. Jim spoke with us about the secret to keeping a business alive in New York, how his “modern speakeasy” fought the inevitable speakeasy backlash, and why PDT may be the Zooropa of the cocktail scene.

Middle Ridge 2008 Pinot Grigio and sure the current vintage is 2010 but Keith and William felt the wine has held up great and showed very well in the glass and yes in the mouth. Last week, I had the once in a lifetime opportunity to spend time with the winemaker and vineyard manager of Inglenook. No, not the box wine that many drank lamenting the ‘man’, and now are. I am referring to the resurrection of the original, the MF OG pimp daddy playa of the Napa Valley, the one that made the 1941 Cabernet that is still regarded the greatest wine ever made in California, Judgement of Paris? These guys were winning medals in Paris before Prohibition, yo. Founded in 1880, a gent named Gustave Niebaum started the first gravity flow winery in Napa, planted the first Cabernet in the area, and his grand nephew carried on the tradition until 1964, when it changed ownership to a group of growers, who then passed it to Heublein (Brass Monkey, baby!), who took the brand name and shoved it in the depths of jug and box wine. Francis Ford Coppola bought the property, located in Rutherford in 1975, and is tirelessly working to bring the integrity and prestige of the estate back to its’ former glory. in the past 35 years, he has restored the original vineyard holdings, the winery, and the Inglenook name, buying it back from the Wine Group last year. In other words, looking back without looking back.

I tell you this story because at the end of the day, wine is fermented grape juice. Owners, winemakers, vineyard managers come and go, but the land stays the same. Great wine is produced from great land. Anyone who has seen the resurgence of Oakvilles’ To-Kalon as a special site can attest to that. Of course, we can chuckle at our earlier years, knocking back MD 20/20, Lancers, and Boones’ Farm. Wine Coolers have been replaced by Moscato. White Zinfandel is still a major player. We have better wines today on average, with a new, exciting winery and region popping up every second, at every price point.

But, as my mother said, “Respect your elders. If you do good, work hard, and be kind to those around you, the same’ll happen to you when you are old.”

The Boys (Keith, William and Jordan) are talking Zinfandel and one Gal Calls in and Chimes in on segment 3, she would be Ginny from Bradford Mountain out of Sonoma…She is so darn nice!!

Nearly as versatile as chardonnay in the number of different styles of wine produced from it, zinfandel only achieved widespread popularity in America, starting about 1980, as a pink, slightly sweet wine. In fact, this popularity so outstripped all other forms, that many fans think that there is actually a grape called “White Zinfandel” (there isn’t)!

Zinfandel as a red wine can be made light and fruity, much like French Beaujolais, or lively, complex and age worthy, like Cabernet or claret. It can also be made into big, ripe, high alcohol style wines that resemble Port. Zinfandel is also a component of most California “jug” wines, since it is the most widely planted red wine grape in the Central Valley. Ok time to listen to the show!!

66 degrees, sunny, but the air is brisk and clear. I bask not in the summer breeze, but in the high altitude transition of winter to spring. Snow capped mountains with Coloradoan honey in running shorts. A great time to be on earth…

We are not the only ones enjoying an early departure from the death grip of winter. Bud break has already happened in areas of Sonoma, signaling the arrival of a new vintage. Love, and spring, is in the air! March can be an exciting month, and this particular one is more memorable than most. As we herald a rebirth in the vineyard and in our own backyard, we welcome the demise of the Great Recession. Joblessness is down, folks are buying more vino and dining out more, and people everywhere are feeling the tinge of optimism. Sheeeeeaaat. If things go this well the rest of the year, there may be hope for Snooki…

Wine over the last couple of years has enabled us to do a couple of (very much-needed) things: drank our proverbial sorrows away after our spouse, job, 401k, dog, and kids left us as we sang along (off-key and loudly) to our favorite country song; we reinvented the dinner party, had a bottle or three with old friends (taking advantage of deals on expensive wine in stores and on the internet), and remembered what, in the end, is most important; no, not that friends are irreplaceable and make life meaningful, we know that shit after watching romantic comedies with your better half. It’s that a 100 dollar bottle of wine that you got for 40 is bloody good…

I verily say to all y’all today (shout out to ma Texas peeps), drink your favorite wine today irregardless of price or age, because things are improving, that there is good in the world, and, as I said at the start of this post…this is a great time to be on earth. Hotties (male or female, whatever floats your boat) and a bottle of rose on someones’ patio at 4 in the afternoon. This is a time of celebration. Need I say more?

And, if it snows some more…two tears in a bucket, Ski season’s extended!

We tasted the 2010 Benton Lane PInot Gris, Classic Clean, Fresh Pinot Gris that has a ton of character and a fantastic underlying base of acidity that all will love as an aperitif and or with a beautiful chicken salad. Throw on top some freshly sliced yellow bell pepper and a granny smith apple sliced and diced up… yummy, pour us a glass please! 

Also the 2009 Benton Lane Pinot Noir which in our mind is a bit of a fuller body style Pinot Noir. Love blueberries?… they jump out of the glass in a fantastic, yummy and OMG way. The Rhone: In the 17th century, “Côte du Rhône” was the name of an administrative district in the Vicariate of Uzès (Gard), where the wines were particularly renowned. Regulations were introduced in 1650 to guarantee their origin and their quality.

By an Edict of the King in 1737, all the casks that were to be used for carriage and sale had to be branded with the letters “C.D.R.”. It was only in the middle of the 19th century that Côte du Rhône became Côtes du Rhône, by including the vineyards on the left bank of the Rhone. This notability, which had been steadily accrued over the centuries, was given official recognition by the High Courts of Tournon and Uzès in 1936.

Then came the ultimate recognition, thanks to the endeavours of Baron Le Roy – a man with courage and vision – with the creation in 1937 of an AOC - Appellation d’Origine Controlée – Côtes du Rhône. An A.O.C. classification is the acknowledgement both of a contemporary reality and a tradition that is comprised of a number of key elements: one or more varieties of vine, a clearly defined territory and superb expertise in wine production.

Italo Jofre: Italo Jofre is ideally suited to his new role as roving Wine Ambassador for Chile’s prestigious Concha y Toro estates. Italo brings with him over a decade’s worth of winemaking experience that ranges from California to Chile. In his most recent capacity Italo proved himself an effective and engaging spokesperson for Viñedos Emiliana. There he had the opportunity to work alongside some of South America’s most acclaimed winemakers, notably the famed consulting enologist, Alvaro Espinoza.  More on Italo at Concha Y Toro
